Superintendent's Extracurricular Activities Update

Please note: Livingstone School will not be opening to spectators due to limited capacity but we will continue to live steam. School administration is working with the Division Office to ensure we proceed with a plan that works for our specific school situation. We will be reviewing this situation again in 2 weeks. The following update from the Superintendent as it applies to other schools in the juirsdiction is for your information.

Dear LRSD Community,

I am writing this letter to ask for your help to keep our schools healthy and allow us to continue welcoming spectators to our extracurricular events.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have constantly prioritized student learning and safety for all students and staff. We are doing all we can to ensure in-person learning can continue with as little disruption as possible. We additionally seek to provide opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular activities in our schools.

At these extracurricular events, our school administrators and staff supervisors have acted tirelessly to ensure spectator compliance with COVID-19 protocols and public health measures such as masking, limited capacity, and physical distance between households. Being placed in a position to enforce public health restrictions during a pandemic is difficult for anyone and goes above and beyond their regular duties. They do this so that students can have opportunities to experience being part of a team or a club and enjoy the physical, emotional, and mental well-being that result from student participation in these extracurricular activities. As a former physical education teacher, athletic director, coach, school administrator, and parent of student athletes, I join you in thanking our current school administrators, staff, coaches and community volunteers for putting in extra time and effort for our students in this way.

We can all be grateful that students can continue to participate in extracurricular activities at this time; in-person spectating is an added privilege. Beginning Monday, January 24, 2022, we will resume spectators at extracurricular events at ⅓ capacity, adapting based on each school’s seating capacity and gymnasium layout. We have made every effort to live-stream all athletic events so that families and community members can watch remotely in order to promote physical distancing and provide an alternative for those not comfortable or able to attend in person due to capacity limitations and other public health restrictions. I ask that all spectators please be masked, polite, respectful, cooperative, and supportive of all we have in place for our students and their educational experience.

As we focus on our young people in a spirit of cooperation, we can continue to provide extracurricular activities that are so important for the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of our students.

Sincerely,

Darryl Seguin
Superintendent of Schools
